Sheet metal

What it is

Sheet metal parts start as a flat sheet that is laser cut and then bent on a press brake into its final 3D shape. It is a cost-effective way to make strong, light parts such as brackets, enclosures, covers and chassis.

Compared with CNC machining, sheet metal parts are usually cheaper for larger, thin-walled shapes. Compared with laser cutting, they add bends.

Good for

  • Brackets and angle mounts
  • Enclosures, boxes and covers for electronics
  • Panels and chassis
  • Guards and shields
  • Simple frames and supports

Materials

These are the materials you can choose in the price calculator. If you are not sure, keep the first option — it suits most parts. See all materials for more detail.

  • Steel (mild steel) — strong and low cost
  • Stainless steel (304) — does not rust
  • Aluminium (5251) — light, does not rust
  • Copper — conducts electricity and heat

Surface finishes

A finish changes how the part looks and feels, and can protect it. It does not change the shape.

  • As made — bare metal
  • Deburred — sharp edges smoothed
  • Zinc plated — rust protection for steel
  • Powder coated — a tough painted colour finish

Which file to send

A 3D model (STEP or IGES) of the finished, bent part is best. Use the same wall thickness everywhere, as the part is made from one sheet. If you have a flat pattern (DXF), you can send it too.

Tips for a good result and a lower price

  • Use one sheet thickness for the whole part.
  • Keep holes a little away from bend lines so they do not stretch.
  • Inside bend corners are rounded; a radius equal to the sheet thickness is a good default.
  • Very small flanges are difficult to bend — keep each flange at least about 4 × the sheet thickness.

Common questions

What is the difference between laser cutting and sheet metal?

Laser cutting makes flat parts. Sheet metal adds bending, so you get a 3D shape such as a bracket or a box.

Can you add threads or nuts?

Ask us in the order notes. Our engineer will confirm what is possible for your part.

Can parts be painted?

Yes — choose the powder-coated finish and tell us the colour you want in the order notes.
