Laser cutting

A laser cuts flat shapes out of a sheet of metal or plastic. Send us a flat drawing (DXF, DWG, AI or EPS).

What it is

Laser cutting uses a focused laser beam to cut flat shapes out of a sheet. It is fast and accurate, and there is no tooling, so it suits both one-off parts and batches.

Laser cutting works from a flat 2D drawing (an outline of the shape), usually a DXF file. If your part also needs bending, choose sheet metal instead.

Good for

  • Flat plates, brackets, gaskets and shims
  • Panels, covers and signs
  • Mounting plates with holes and slots
  • Acrylic parts and displays
  • Parts for prototypes and repairs

Materials

These are the materials you can choose in the price calculator. If you are not sure, keep the first option — it suits most parts. See all materials for more detail.

  • Steel (mild steel) — strong and low cost
  • Stainless steel (304) — does not rust
  • Aluminium (5251) — light, does not rust
  • Acrylic — clear or coloured plastic

Surface finishes

A finish changes how the part looks and feels, and can protect it. It does not change the shape.

  • As cut — clean laser edge
  • Deburred — sharp edges smoothed
  • Powder coated — a tough painted colour finish

Which file to send

Send a DXF file drawn at full size (1:1) in millimetres, with only the cutting lines — no frames, title blocks or dimensions in the same layer. Tell us the material thickness in the order notes. If you only have a 3D model of a flat part, upload it and we will check it.

Tips for a good result and a lower price

  • Holes should be at least as wide as the sheet is thick.
  • Keep holes and slots at least one sheet thickness away from the edge.
  • Close all outlines — open lines cannot be cut.
  • Several different parts can share one order; this often lowers the price.

Common questions

I don’t have a DXF. What can I send?

Send a 3D model, a PDF drawing or even a clear sketch with sizes. Email it to us and we will tell you what is possible.

Which thickness can I choose?

Available thicknesses depend on the material. Tell us the thickness you need in the order notes and we will confirm.

Is the edge sharp?

A laser edge is clean but can be sharp on metal. Choose the “Deburred” finish to have edges smoothed.
